Brewster, I love your idea, and would like to start something like it. I am wondering how you get funding for the inital purchases, and how do you fund the ongoing expenses. While you give the books to the kids (what a great idea), I am wondering how you pay for the expenses. Lets get as many of these projects going as possible.

Starting a non-profit is not much different than starting a company. I’m going to start an Internetbookmobile in the Tampa Bay Florida area. Here is my approach:
Create a Vision Statement and a Mission Statement. Put together a detailed budget – divided into start up costs and ongoing costs. Be as detailed as possible include everything you can think of – do not exaggerate or underestimate - some donors will examine it in detail. Create a business plan – Who are your customers? Schools, hospitals, old age homes etc. Why is there a need for the Internetbookmobile? How many places will you visit – per week or month? How many books will you be giving out? You should have this number already calculated in your budget. How will you advertise? Web site, local newspapers, television (free stories), fliers and any other creative way you can think of. Create a realistic time frame to get up and running this could be based on amount of funding received or a calendar. Include a brief bio of yourself and any other key players. Clearly state your needs –not just money – supplies, volunteers, equipment and space. With the above prepare an executive summary to give to potential donors who do not want the full package. Outline a thank you letter for donors. Personalize it telling how the donation will be used and invite them to one of your stops to show them how excided the kids are to get a free book. Plan on preparing a quarterly newsletter so that every time they hear from you is not just asking for donations. Do not assume every thing will be given – some companies will sell their goods or services at cost. Last but not least do not get discouraged. You are competing with many good causes especially around the holidays – your passion and enthusiasm will come through and donations will pickup as you continue the adventure! Good luck!
